About us

We are Indonesian-Dutch couple, married in 2002, resident of Utrecht - The Netherlands, have one spoiled dog named Milo and one "gonna be spoiled" baby Isabelle. This webpage mainly is use to share our story and pictures to our family and friends. But of course we always welcome for new friends. The idea of this webpage is to share our story and pictures to our family and friends.

Since Ira's Dutch language is far from perfect and Dimitri's Indonesian language is even worse, we decided to use English as the main language in this blog, eventhough lately due to the laziness of Ira, Indonesian language seems to take over.

Please feel free to browse around and give us your comment.

Finally, it's snowing..... three days too late, so it's not officially a white christmas, but he! I still got my christmas tree, the lamps are on, it still feel like christmas so it's white christmas for me....

I guess for some people snow is not a big deal at all, but it is for me. If you used to lived in a place where everyday's temperature is 30 C, a little snow makes a bit difference.

Anyway, I had a relaxing christmas weekend Since early December, Dim's parent rent a holiday house in Zeeland, one of island close to the Belgium's border. The house is very close to the beach, about 5 minutes walking. We arrived on friday night, chrismas eve. Having dinner together, playing scrabble all 6 of us... oya, dim's brother, Taco also there with his girlfriend, Beeuwke.

Saturday 25 December, woke up late, having breakfast then we were all walking along the beach.... Milo is having time of his life running free without the lash, playing with ball. Weather was ok, no sun but at least it's dry. Back to the house, having light lunch. Then Dim and Milo and I did some touring along the coast. Back to the house for dinner. Did some game, then sleep.

Sunday 26 December, Taco and Beeuwke leaved to Apeldoorn, to Beeuwke's parents. So only 4 of us, walking along the beach.... played with Milo.. then back home... having lunch and then packing to go back home.

Before we went back to Utrecht, we stopped by in Bergen op Zoom. That the town where Dimitri is born. We passed all the three houses where he used to lived, also his kindergarden school, elementary school and of course high school.

Monday 27 December, we take it easy.... I took one day off, and so Dimitri. Again, woke up late, taking bath slow..... then do some groceries. Milo is a bit sick... too tired I guess.

And today, back to work... and it's snowing!!!!!! Perfect weekend....

After Sinterklaas then it's time for Christmas tree..... I was thinking to use real tree this year, considering it more fresh and has nice smell but my lazyness beat it. Real tree also means more vacuuming, cos the leafs will falling off. So, like last year we just use the fake one...

So this is my christmas tree; with and without lamps

Ik voel me een beetje ziek.... Dus, woorden zijn door elkaar in mijn hoofd... hehehe anyway... I feel a bit sick since yesterday, I hope I don't caught flu or something...

Been more than a week since i write something here... a lots of thing happen... Denny was getting worse then getting better then worse again... His surgery has been scheduled, cancelled then scheduled again... He has been scheduled for surgery for tomorrow morning. I called him yesterday but he is too sick to talk... I'll try again later... I hope to be able to talk to him before the surgery.

On the bright side is that I got another year contract on MCL and this time I'm a full employeer, still parttimer though but no longer paid by hours. I got the right of 22 days leave, holiday money and other benefits like getting paid when you're sick etc.

Last Thursday we watched Holiday on Ice, we got free ticket froma friend that works in the Rode Kruis (Netherland's Red Cross)... it was good, refreshing, relaxing... been a long time since Dim and I went out at night... usually I prefer to stay at home... warm and I can play with Milo. Anyway, the theme is Hollywood.... so they impersonated famous actor/actress, famous movies... my favourites are Footloose and Dirty Dancing.. how can they moves like that I can't imagined... I wish I can skate.... I want to learn but I don't want to fall...

5 December!!!! Sinterklaas day!!!!

Here in Netherland, every 5 December we celebrate the coming of Sinterklaas... 5 December?? Aren't he supposed to come on the night of 24 December?? Nope... that's Santa Claus.... Aren't they the same guy after all? Hmmm.. I don't think so

So what's the different between Sinterklaas and Santa Claus? Here's some of the differences that I can think of:

St. Claus lives in North Pole
Sinterklaas lives in Spain even some other info that I read said that originally from Turkey

St. Claus helped by elfs
Sinterklaas helped by Zwarte Pit (Pit the black)

St. Claus gives gifts on Christmas's eve
Sinterklaas gives gives on 5 December

St. Claus rides reindeer
Sinterklaas comes with the steamboat (at least that how he comes to Netherland)

St. Claus wears red suit with black belt and cute hat
Sinterklaas wear bishop suit with bishop hat and cane

St. Claus famous in the whole world
Sinterklaas only known in Netherland, Belgie, Germany and their ex-colonials... like Indonesia...

We all already know who is St. Claus.. so, who's Sinterklaas anyway?

Here's some other info I found... thank's to google...

In the fourth century a.d. St. Nicholas (in dutch called "Sinterklaas" or "Sint Nicolaas"; in german called "Sankt Nikolaus") was the bishop of Myra, which is now situated in Turkey. According to the legend, he saved his town from starvation. He is also said to have revived three dead children, and to have offered gifts of dowries to poor girls. Some sources say that he died on the sixth of December in 343. In 1087 his relics were taken to Bari in Italy.

It is unclear why, according to the Dutch tradition, he comes from Spain. Possibly it has something to do with the fact that St. Nicholas was the patron of sailors. In the 17th century Holland was famous for its navigation. Maybe by contact with Spanish sailors this myth began. It could also explain why St. Nicholas has "zwarte (black) pieten" to help him because the Moors dominated Spain for several hundreds of years. (Another [more popular] explanation for "zwarte piet" being black is that he has come down the chimneys so often [see below] that he can't wash the dirt off.)

His legendary gifts of dowries to poor girls led to the custom of giving gifts to children on the eve of his feast day, 6 December. The companions of St. Nicholas (in Germany and Austria they are called "Knecht Ruprecht" or "Krampus") show the victory over evil. Together with his "pieten" he visits children to punish the evil ones and to reward the good ones. The worst punishment is to be taken to Spain in "zwarte piet's" bag out of which the good children get the sweets called "pepernoten", "taai-taai", or "schuimpjes") and presents. A less radical punishment is to get the "roede" (rod) instead of presents. Nowadays there are not much evil children any more...

A few weeks before his feastday St. Nicholas comes to Holland (and Belgium) on his steamer with all his "pieten" and the presents which they prepared in Spain during the year. This event can be seen on Dutch television. From his arrival in Holland till his feastday the children can put their shoes in front of the fireplace. During the night St. Nicholas visits all the houses by travelling over the roofs on his horse, traditionally a white/grey (called "Schimmel" in dutch), and "zwarte piet" enters the houses through the chimney to put little presents in the children's shoes. Sometimes the children put straw, carrots and water near the shoe for the horse.

On the eve of his feast day St. Nicholas visits all children. After knocking on the door he gives them a bag full of presents (if they were good children). Early in the morning of 6 December, when he has visited everyone, he leaves and goes back silently to Spain, to come back next year.

This is St. Claus that we all familiar with

And this is Sinterklaas with all his Zwarte Pit

During the Sinterklaas period one eats spicy ginger `speculaas' or `pepernoten', mild anise `taai-taai' in fancy doll shapes, sugar candy, fancy fruit slices or rich almond marzipan, and chocolate letters (mostly you get only the first letter of your first name)

And of course, my Chocolate Letter... the letter for Dimitri already been eaten before I have a chance to take picture of it... man!!!!

time is the enemy of love
the thief that shortens all our golden hours
i have never understand then
why lovers count their happiness in days and nights and years
while our love can only be measured in our joys and sight and tears

Denny is in hospital again His doctor ordered him to go at once when denny came for check up. His condition is too not good. They did CT Scan yesterday, and they found out that his tumor growing again and there is water inside his head, I think it's the side effect of his last surgery. Some kind of hydrocephalus effect.

So he's been scheduled for another surgery next week, tuesday, and maybe this time, the doctor will not entirely close his skull for future treatment... I hope the surgey will going well. I certainly hope that I can still meet him next year.... Please God, don't let him die...
